　　本剧再现一代名将的爱国情殇，一段荡气回肠的世纪爱情，一场轰轰热热的恩怨情仇。皇姑屯事件、中原大战、长城抗战、西安事变、金陵囚禁……
　　这是一部描述爱国将领张学良将军的宏篇巨剧，真实再现了这位中华民族的千古功臣传奇的一生，以及与蒋介石之间几十年的恩怨，情节层叠起伏扣人心弦。
　　随着日军侵华野心的日趋膨胀，东北战事一触即发。奉系军阀张作霖在沈阳附近的皇姑屯站被日本关东军谋害。奉军与南京政府实行统一合作，张学良被国民政府任命为东北边防军司令长官，东北军诞生。
　　日本关东军制造“柳条湖事件”，以此为藉口，炮击东北军北大营。东北军奉命不抵抗。一夜之间沈阳失守。张学良召集北平名流，讨论对东北问题的对策，决定依赖“国联”，听命中央。并电告南京国民政府，日军长驱直入，锦州危急。
　　章太炎抵北平劝说张学良武装抗日，张学良上书蒋介石，请缨抗战，遭蒋努斥。遂与杨虎城秘密商议，决定实行“兵谏”。
　　西安数千名学生进行游行示威，前往临潼向蒋请愿。蒋下令“格杀勿论”，张学良亲自追到东郊十里铺劝阻说：“保证一星期内用事实来答复他们”。
　　蒋介石召集军事会议，决定发布第六次“围剿红军命令”。张、杨决心不再与红军作战，要抢先打乱他的计划。当晚，张到华清池向蒋苦谏，毫无结果。蒋决定把东北军调到福建，是日晚，他与杨虎城将军，为救国救民，力挽狂澜，发动兵谏，逼迫蒋介石停止内战，联共抗日，蒋被迫答应。却在张送其回南京后下令组成军事法庭对张进行审判，并将其囚禁于金陵……
